Advocate Attorneys is a Washington, D.C.-based law firm seeking attorneys to participate in our Consumer Protection Attorney Fellowship. Our goal is to empower a nationwide army of attorneys to provide legal guidance and representation to consumers who are facing debt collection and other financial distress. Our mission is to provide access to justice for consumers in their potential claims against debt collectors, mortgage servicers, credit reporting agencies, banks, credit card companies, debt buyers, payday lenders, and other financial predators.
Our training will focus on the practical business side of building a consumer law practice as well as the substantive law around claims made pursuant to Federal Consumer Protection Statutes such as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act, the Truth in Lending Act, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, the Electronic Funds Transfer Act, and relevant state law consumer protection statutes.
Participating attorneys will receive training and mentorship and can commit to the Fellowship as their time and desire permit. There is no cost to participants in the Fellowship program.
Potential clients will be identified and referred by Advocate to participants. For affirmative claims, Advocate does not intend to charge anything out-of-pocket to consumers, as these matters are typically accepted on a contingency and/or fee-shifting (in which creditors pay consumers' legal fees) basis. Participants will also be encouraged to represent referred clients in fee for service work like debt or foreclosure defense for which they will take primary responsibility (and receive the bulk of the fees) with the support and oversight of experienced
lawyers.
Advocate envisions compensating participating attorneys on a progressive model, as attorneys gain experience and are able to participate in more substantive legal work for Advocate clients, Fellowship attorneys will share an escalating proportion of the legal fees recovered. All court and litigation costs will be advanced by Advocate.
