JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY:The Third Mate has primary authority, responsibility and accountability for the preparation of all safety equipment to ensure the effective operational readiness at all times. Proven ship handling skills or on the job training are necessary to master the vessel's Z-Drive (Azimuth) propulsion and steering system.The M/V Delta Mariner, a purpose-engineered vessel designed to transport rocket booster cores for Boeing's Delta IV Program. The primary route is between the Mississippi River and Cape Canaveral, FL. The secondary route is from the Mississippi River to Southern California, via the Panama Canal.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The Third Mate will become familiar with the duties of Second Mate should an operational emergency occur.

Assigned to two 6 hour watches per day, while the vessel is underway.

The Second Mate must be skilled in the use of all sound navigational practices including route and voyage planning, piloting, celestial navigation (when applicable.)

Must be familiar with electronic navigation and communication equipment (Depth Sounders, Radar, Gyrocompass, GPS, Radios, GMDSS, etc.)

Must develop experience with Ro/Ro cargo and lashings, stability and trim software programs and other relevant functions of the Chief Mate, should an emergency situation arise.

Must be a participant in the company's Job Safety Analysis program.

Must understand the changes required when switching from navigating measurements and datums used in ocean charting to those used in the inland river systems as this is critical for the safe navigation of the vessel.

Responsible for maintaining a healthy work environment and positive morale aboard the vessel.

In the event of a failed hazardous material transfer, oil spill, accident, illness or other serious marine incident, the Second Mate maintains a close work environment with the Master and acts as a scribe for events and intermediary for the Master.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Current Third Mate of Steam or Motor Vessels of Any Gross Tons, upon oceans.

This position requires two years' experience sailing as a third mate on ocean going vessels over 1600 GRT.

Current Unlimited Radar Observer & ARPA, ECDIS, GMDSS.

Preference given to candidates who are experienced with azimuth thrusters.

Must have a current STCW, TWIC, Passport, and Driver's License.

Valid Certificates for First Aid and CPR and Advanced Fire Fighting.

Hold a valid USCG Medical Certificate.

Maintain VPDSD Training Endorsement.

Familiar with Stability and Trim requirements / software application.

Familiarity with USCG sub Chapter I requirements.

Must achieve Fit for Duty status on pre-employment physical & drug screen.
