Wright Brothers Contracting Inc. of Charleston, TN provides excavation and grading services throughout the Southeast. We are seeking, for immediate hire, Heavy Construction Foreman and Superintendents experienced with managing 8-10 person crews. Extensive knowledge with mass earth grading and pipe laying. 10 years minimum requirement with all of the following - dozers, excavators, compactors, and off-road trucks. Wright Brothers utilizes high quality equipment with GPS. Work hours will include significant overtime hours. Landfill construction experience is a plus.

Wright Brothers participates in Drug Free Workplace programs, so applicants will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen as well as a fitness for duty physical. Travel in the Southeast will be required. Applicants will need reliable transportation to get to the jobsites. Lodging will be provided.

Reports to: Construction Manager

Summary of Position

The Superintendent provides supervision of highway and heavy civil construction projects. The Superintendent helps promote an environment in which safety, environmental, and health concerns are top priority and ensures all work is completed on time and in compliance with project plans.

Essential Functions

Key Activities and Position Responsibilities

Safety

Conduct daily pre-job briefings, safety meetings, and address how daily tasks are to be carried out.

Perform a JSA before any new tasks are undertaken.

Perform daily site inspections to insure that safety standards are met. Make corrections as immediately.

Handle onsite incidents and emergencies in a proactive manner.

Must be committed to contributing to a culture of safety, looking out for yourself and others.

General Responsibilities

Accept the duties of performing and completing tasks as assigned by a Project Engineer or Project Manager.

Complete assignments efficiently and provide a quality product for the Companys clients.

Create a team of workers that perform well together.

Understand the job specifications.

Monitor daily construction procedures to ensure that proper quality is maintained and that schedules are being followed.

Create and maintain positive working relationships with owners, vendors, and suppliers.

Verify that required permits and licenses have been obtained.

Project Reporting

Monitor daily construction procedures to ensure that proper quality is maintained and that schedules are being followed.

Oversee submission of daily project progress information as required for record keeping “ hours, equipment usage, quantities, etc.

Resource Management

Take responsibility to complete the project on-time and on-budget, according to project specifications.

Direct multiple activities on the project and manages multiple foremen and/or subcontractors.

Work directly with the project manager to create a work plan for the project.

Provide workers with information on how a project needs to be completed.

Ensure that each team member is aware of quality standards and company policies.

Direct the efforts of field personnel with a view to meeting deadlines.

Ensure that all workers are provided with a practical schedule that they must follow.

Handle labor procurement duties and ensure backups.

Make sure that workers are knowledgeable of work ethics and best practices.

Hire and task train site workers.

Ensure appropriate care and maintenance of construction tools and equipment.

Discuss procurement needs with the project manager.

Procure materials and equipment and ensure appropriate inventory of both.

Project Controls

Discuss procurement needs with the project superintendent or manager.

Understand the use of purchase orders.

Ensure that any significant information is communicated to the supervisor.

Create and maintain positive working relationships with owners, vendors, and suppliers.

Attend project meetings as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position supervises all employees who directly report to this position and is responsible for the hiring and evaluation of those employees, including other tangible employment actions.

Work Environment

This is a safety sensitive position that works in an environment in which safety, environmental, and health concerns demand constant attention.

This position regularly works in outdoor conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration. The environment involves considerable exposure to inclement weather including rain or snow, heat and humidity, high winds, and cold. The environment often includes dirt, dust, asphalt, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

The position is very active and the employee sits, walks and stands for long periods of time and regularly performs strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. This requires balancing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing. The employee lifts heavy objects, pushes, pulls or carries objects, and uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. The position requires good manual dexterity (uses hands to finger, handle or feel, hand with arm, two hands) and multilimb coordination. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to talk, hear, and see.

Specific hearing abilities required by this position include the ability to adequately enough to be alerted by horns, sirens, shouting, or any other noise that is meant to convey a safety warning. If a corrective device is required to achieve this level of hearing, the employee must be able to wear PPE without interfering with the corrective device or the required PPE.

Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. If corrective lenses are required to achieve this level of vision, the corrective lenses must be compliant with OSHA/MSHA requirements and the employee must be able to wear PPE without interfering with the corrective lenses or the required PPE

The employee frequently must lift or move objects up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move objects up to 100 pounds.

The employee regularly is required to:

read and write to accurately complete documentation.

read, hear, and understand written and verbal instructions.

work long shifts with non-standard break times.

work at heights of up to 100 or more.

work in enclosed spaces.

walk moderate distances to reach work area (1/2 mile or more).

wear a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, and safety-toed boots

Hours/Days of Work

This is a full-time position which will typically involves long hours, weekend, and holiday work. Due to the nature of the job, the employee must be available on-call early/late hours to deal with delays, bad weather, and emergencies at the job site.

Travel

Travel primarily is local during the business day with travel to construction job sites as assigned.

Education and Experience

At least 5 years of experience working on highway and heavy civil construction projects preferred.
