SummaryThis position is located in Auburn, AL with the USDA Aquatic Animal Health Research Unit. This position is designed to serve as a developmental experience and in conjunction with formal education, to provide the incumbent with the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities for employment in a civil service career. Upon successful program completion and having met all legal and regulatory requirements, the incumbent may be converted to a permanent position or a term position lasting 1-4 years.ResponsibilitiesAssists in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment, common to the assigned area of work.Performs routine and recurring techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment.Maintains, calibrates, and modifies equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies samples and supporting records; maintains records and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources.Maintains inventory of chemicals, prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse, and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological).Keeps detailed records of experimental data. Tabulates, statistically analyzes, and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages.Keeps work-site in a neat and orderly manner.RequirementsConditions of EmploymentQualificationsThe duties of the position to which the individual is appointed should be related to either the student trainee's academic or career goals (i.e, biological sciences). Pathways Internship Qualification:GS-5: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree. Pathways Internship Eligibility:An individual who has been accepted for enrollment or who is enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) from a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis is eligible. Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.EducationCompletion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree. Transcripts: You must submit a copy of your college transcript or high school diploma/GED certificate as proof that you meet the educational requirements for the grade to which you are applying. You may submit unofficial copies of transcripts at the initial phase of the application process; however, if selected, you will be required to submit official transcripts prior to entrance-on-duty. All transcripts must be in English or include an English translation.Additional InformationStudent Interns must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of the appointment. Incumbents will be required to provide proof of continued enrollment and good standing each semester of grading period throughout the internship program. Failure to do so will result in termination of the appointment. Upon completion of all program requirements, Pathways Interns may be converted to a term, career-conditional or career appointment within 120 days following successful completion of all their education; however, conversion is not guaranteed.The full performance level (FPL) of the position to which converted may be up to the GS-07 level.
