Position Overview:The Sterile Processing Technician supplies the hospital with sterilized supplies and equipment as required by Infection Control standards for quality patient care. The Sterile Processing Technician begins the infection control process by decontaminating, inspecting, and organizing instruments and equipment for sterilization. Monitors biological testing to maintain infection control.Qualifications:Education:High school graduate or equivalent; graduate of sterile processing technician course work; certification preferred after one year of employment, but required after two years of employment.Experience:One (1) year sterile processing experience, or completion of a technical course, or related background in instrumentation, supply and equipment purchasing, nursing, or comparable area.Knowledge:Safe, proper handling and cleaning of surgical instruments and equipment. Sterilization practices and principles. Instruments and what instruments are to be used for which case. Medical terminology. Sterile processing personal protective equipment. Blood born pathogen policy. Environmentally controlled environment, and what it means to have a negative pressure air flow. Problem solving techniques with respect to problems that arise with instruments and equipment. Knowledge of proper body mechanics for lifting, pushing, and pulling heavy instruments and carts. Regulatory guidelines such as: OSHA, JCAHO, DSH, APIC, AORN, etc. Vendor interaction to include: ordering supplies and instruments; handling faulty or missing equipment; repairs; maintenance.Skills:Ability to operate five (5) different sterile processing and ultra sonic machines. Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced critical care environment with constantly changing priorities. Basic computer skills. Ability to order new instruments and take care of repairs; facilitate acquisition of loaner equipment. Ability to work directly with OR staff, providing support to include problem solving and direction.
