Position Overview:The Orthopedic Technician provides clinical support to clinicians, encompassing all aspects of orthopedic patient care, consistent with SMF Care Center Policies and Procedures. Duties include taking vital signs and patient histories, orthopedic immobilization, casting, splinting, cast removal, and scheduling patient appointments, surgeries, and follow-up activities. Depending on a clinician's individual requirements, this position may or may not assess and prepare patients, assist in the operating room, and/or perform procedures within the orthopedic medical office. All casting/splinting/immobilization must be done under the direct supervision of the clinician.Qualifications:Minimum Position Requirements:Education:High school diploma or equivalent. Certification as an Athletic Trainer preferred. Current certification in CPR / Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Certification as an Orthopedic Technician preferred.Experience:Experience in the orthopedic medical field required. 2-3 years experience in an ambulatory care medical office setting preferred. Medical experience sufficient to assist in the ambulatory setting and/or operating room, and to perform and/or assist with specific orthopedic procedures, and preparing patients for these procedures. Understanding of medical asepsis versus surgical asepsis, and how it is applied to dressing changes and setting up of sterile fields.Knowledge:Knowledge of scope of practice for Clinical Assistants (Medical Assistants) in the State of California. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. Knowledge of orthopedic equipment (casts, immobilization devices and splints). Knowledge of medical office clinical equipment and testing procedures is required. As a new employee, must successfully complete the Clinical Core Competencies Assessment (CCCA) course.Special Skills/Equipment:Excellent communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to provide care, instruction, and persuasion by phone, and to collaborate with other team members. Math skills sufficient to correctly mix medications for injections, interpret tests, etc. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to interpret most fractures and dislocations on x-ray films. Ability to perform in an operating room and/or ambulatory environment in an expert and professional manner, as an assistant. Ability to immobilize most fractures following clinical protocol.
