SummaryThis position is located within the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Soil Dynamics Research Unit located in Auburn, AL. The primary purpose of this position is to participate in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of complex technical duties, in a laboratory or field environment, as it relates to plants, soil, water, and gas sampling and analysis.ResponsibilitiesCollects, prepares, evaluates and verifies plant, soil, water, and gas samples and supporting records.Adapt, modify, or develop new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project in regards to analysis of plants, soil, water, and gas samples.Maintain research plots collection of plant, soil, and water samples and conducts laboratory analysis of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus and other elements on samples.Ability to collect and analyze gas samples obtained from research plots.Perform the full range of techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment such as carbon/nitrogen analyzers, liquid Flow Injection Analysis systems, gas chromatographs, PH and EH meters, and photoacoustic analyzersRequirementsConditions of EmploymentQualificationsApplicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: At the GS-07:Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in an experiment or research project related to plants, soil, water, or gas; collecting, preparing for analysis, or evaluating samples related to plants, soil, water, or gas; recording or analyzing scientific data; and operating or maintaining scientific equipment such as carbon nitrogen analyzers, liquid Flow Injection Analysis systems, gas chromatographs, or PH and EH meters or performing scientific techniques. OR Education: Successful completion of one full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Chemistry, Agronomy, or Soil Science. OR A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above. For example 6 months of specialized experience combined with 9 credit hours of relevant graduate level coursework. At the GS-08:Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting an experiment or research project related to plants, soil, water, or gas; collecting, preparing for analysis, or evaluating samples related to plants, soil, water, or gas; recording or analyzing of scientific data; and operating and maintaining scientific equipment such as carbon nitrogen analyzer, liquid Flow Injection Analysis systems, gas chromatographs, or PH and EH meters or performing scientific techniques. OR Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Chemistry, Agronomy, or Soil Science. OR An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above. For example 6 months of specialized experience combined with 18 credit hours of relevant graduate level coursework. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
