I do VIPKid as a side job and I have loved it. The kids that I teach are a lot of fun and most of them are very fluent in English which makes it a blast to talk with them about their life and culture. The work isn't hard. There is a little bit of a learning curve (as with any job) but after you get a feel for it, it is really simple. It's basically like Skyping with one child and reading through a powerpoint presentation. The PowerPoint slides are very simple (see the included picture of me teaching a student).
After you have taught for a couple weeks, you'll not even need to do any prep work before the class because you'll have already seen all of the PowerPoint slides for all the classes. So, now, I have no prep work before a class.
You can create your own schedule. Yet, China is 12 hours ahead of the East Coast (EST) so work hours are in the morning from 6am-10am (Monday - Friday). On Friday and Saturday nights, you can schedule hours between 7:30pm - Midnight. You don't have to work all of these hours. You choose how many you teach and when you teach. I used to think these hours were so early, but now I love it. I get up early, do my work and I'm done by 10:00am and have my whole day ahead of me.
Also you can get raises after your first year and LOTS of bonuses along the way. You can work from your home or anywhere that has an internet connection. That means you are not paying for gas to drive to work and not wasting time commuting to a job. Payment is direct deposit.
Most days it doesn't even feel like work. 95% of the time I teach the same students and they have become like family. I love to see them and talk with them.
I know the idea of teaching kids in China can seem intimidating because of the technology involved and the learning curve - I get it - I had the same concerns. But, you don't need to know Chinese and you don't have to be a computer wiz. You'll also be hard pressed to find a job that is so fun, with great bonuses, high pay per hour and allows you to set your own schedule.
